The Matter of Hair: The Smell of Nothing

Hair care has taught us to expect a scent. Coconut, vanilla, flowers, fruit, something fresh or something sweet. For many people, fragrance has become part of how a hair product is supposed to feel. So when we say Chryosis is fragrance free, it is easy to assume that means the formula should smell like absolutely nothing.

It does not. A formula is made from ingredients, and ingredients can have scents of their own. Botanical extracts, oils, conditioning ingredients and other materials can all contribute something to the way a finished product smells. Fragrance free does not mean the absence of every possible smell. It means something much simpler.

Fragrance Free Is Not the Same as Unscented

The two terms sound similar, but they can mean different things. An unscented product is generally made with the goal of having little or no noticeable smell. Depending on the formula, ingredients may be used to help mask or reduce the natural scent of other ingredients.

For Chryosis, fragrance free means we do not add fragrance simply to make the formula smell a certain way. We are not promising that you will open the jar and smell absolutely nothing. You may notice a faint scent from the ingredients themselves, especially when the cream is in your hands.

We think it is better to be clear about that. Fragrance free should not have to mean pretending that the ingredients inside a formula have no character of their own.

A Formula Has a Smell of Its Own

Botanical ingredients are a good example. Plants naturally have aromas, and extracts made from them can carry some of that character into a formula. Other functional ingredients can have subtle scents too. When everything comes together, the finished cream may naturally smell like something even though no fragrance has been added.

You may notice that scent differently depending on how you use the product. It can be easier to notice when the cream is concentrated in your hands and much less noticeable once it has been worked through the hair.

That is simply part of using a formula made from real ingredients.

Why We Choose to Leave Fragrance Out

There is nothing wrong with liking scented hair care. For some people, fragrance is one of the most enjoyable parts of using a beauty product.

But not everyone experiences fragrance in the same way. For some people, it can be a trigger or something they prefer to avoid, especially if they have fragrance sensitivities or a sensitive or reactive scalp. Styling products can also remain in the hair and close to the scalp for hours or days, which makes this something we think about carefully.

Leaving fragrance out is not our way of saying that fragrance is bad. It is simply one of the choices we make when deciding what Chryosis needs and what it does not.

Your Hair Care Does Not Have to Choose Your Scent

There is another side to fragrance free hair care that has nothing to do with sensitivity.

A lot of us already have a scent we chose for ourselves. Maybe it is a perfume you have worn for years or one that has slowly become part of how people recognize you. When shampoo, conditioner and styling products all bring their own strong scents, they can sometimes compete with the fragrance you actually wanted to wear.

Fragrance free hair care leaves more room for that choice to stay yours. Your hair does not need to smell like coconut because your curl cream decided it should. It does not need another layer of vanilla or flowers sitting beside your perfume.

There is something we like about that simplicity. Your hair care does not have to decide what you smell like. You can.

What We Would Rather You Notice

We would rather the experience of Chryosis come from what happens when the formula meets your hair. How easily it spreads. The slip as you work it through your curls. How the hair feels while detangling. The softness and movement once everything dries.

That is where we want the formula to make itself known.

Our approach has never been about creating a long list of ingredients people should fear. We would rather ask what each ingredient is there to do and whether it has a reason for being there. Added fragrance is simply something we have chosen not to make part of that experience.

So fragrance free does not mean there will never be a smell. Sometimes you may notice the ingredients. Sometimes you may barely notice them at all.
